Common Questions about TeakGuard and Teak

We also have more in-depth information available about TeakGuard.

What is TeakGuard?

TeakGuard is a modern treatment for teak which is easy to apply and lasts a long time. It's very easy to maintain, yet it protects your teak and looks great.

TeakGuard provides 100% protection from the sun and keeps your teak looking great for the entire season. You'll never have to sand or strip your teak again!

How does it make my life easier?

There are two reasons why TeakGuard will make your life a little more pleasant.

  1. TeakGuard is easy to apply.
  2. It lasts a long time.

Why is this true? Its simple: when you do need to put on more TeakGuard, all you have to do is wipe it on: you don't have to reclean your teak. Isn't that easier than what you are doing now?

How long does it last?

TeakGuard will generally last for the entire season without turning black or grey. It works great on both new and old teak and is easy to maintain.

The exact lifetime of TeakGuard does depend upon several factors such as exposure, the environment, etc., but most people get an entire season out of one application.

How do I apply and maintain TeakGuard?

It's really simple.

  1. Clean your teak.
  2. Wipe on three or more coats of TeakGuard.

Applying TeakGuard is the easiest job you'll find on your boat. Each coat takes only 15 minutes to dry and TeakGuard won't stain your fiberglass if you spill it.

Annual maintenance is very easy: just wipe on another coat or two. You do not have to re-clean your teak.

Am I stuck with TeakGuard once I use it?

Definitely NOT! TeakGuard is not a permanent treatment and can be removed easily using ordinary teak cleaner.

Why does teak turn black and grey?

Many people think that teak becomes black or grey because dirt is getting stuck in the wood, but this is not true. The black and grey spots on teak are actually mold and mildew growing in the wood (you can read more about this on our Teak Cleaning Page).

TeakGuard doesn't have this problem. Because it is not organic like oils, mold and mildew cannot grow in the teak and the teak won't turn black or grey.

How do I clean teak?

Cleaning teak isn't magic, it just takes some work. Unfortunately, people who don't use TeakGuard get to repeat this step quite often. You can read more about cleaning teak on our Teak Cleaning Page

We have more detailed information about cleaning teak available.

What if my teak is rough and weathered?

Although it may not look very good, rough and weathered teak usually has enough teak oil inside to keep it protected from rot. Simply put, rough teak is a cosmetic problem, not a maintenance problem.

If you don't mind rough wood, then great! Just apply TeakGuard to keep the mold and mildew from growing on the wood. If you prefer a smooth surface, then you might want to sand your teak. We have more detailed information available on these topics.

How is TeakGuard different from teak oil?

Nearly all teak oil products turn black or gray within a month or two. When they go bad, you'll have to start the entire process over again, cleaning the teak and coating it. After this happens 3 or 4 times a season, you'll wish you had never heard of teak.

TeakGuard is not an organic product, so it won't turn black or gray like oils do. Because it lasts much longer than oil, it doesn't require constant maintenance. And best of all, it won't stain your fiberglass if you spill it.

TeakGuard brings out the color of natural, clean teak. It does not get darker as it gets older and won't build up over time.

How is TeakGuard different from varnish or other coatings?

In general, any surface coating (such as varnish) will never last indefinitely. Water eventually gets underneath the coating and cannot penetrate through the wood. Since it cannot exit through the wood, it forces its way through the coating, causing cracking or peeling. Also, most coatings must be sanded to remove them (definitely a hard job!)

Since TeakGuard penetrates into the wood, it is not a surface coat and is safe for decks and walkways. You never have to strip or sand your teak to remove TeakGuard. It is also very easy to patch.

How much does TeakGuard cost?
